Blog: Communications Officer’s log Week 17

I came back to work this week after a few days of leave running up to Easter, spending time with family in Argyll and Arran.

I was straight back into things this from Tuesday this week, with our team stand-up meeting and a discussion about the forthcoming Scotland Demands Better national demonstration.

I created this branding for Scotland Demands Better based on the original design work done by the STUC. This version uses League Gothic, which is a sister font of League Spartan that is used for The Poverty Alliance identity. And the parallelogram is in Poverty Alliance red. At the moment, I'm still treating it as a first draft. I'd welcome thoughts.

I created this holding webpage, because we're getting to the stage of talking about the demonstration more openly. I spent time this week designing materials to be taken to our stall at the Scottish TUC congress in Dundee next week. I previously created a film that will be shown to delegates. It's really important for us to make sure the trade union movement is engaged and motivated in taking part.

On Wednesday I had a one-to-one meeting with my manager Ruth. She asked me to convene a Communications Group that will contribute to the framing of messages and the look of materials for Scotland Demands Better. I've already got some good people on board and I hope to have our first meeting before the end of May.

I'm always looking to deepen my knowledge of framing communications around our shared human values. I'd read the work of Each And Every Child previously, but this week I took part in their Metaphor Deep Dive session. It was very interesting, and I could see clear paralells and synergies with the Values First training I deliver, based on Talking About Poverty by Frameworks UK.

On our social media this week, we highlighted a blog by our Development Officer Lydia about her work supporting the Race & the Right to a Healthy Environment work by the Environmental Rights Centre for Scotland.

For the right to a healthy environment to be realised for all Scots, we must listen and respond to the experiences and needs of our diverse communities. Our Lydia Murphy blogs about the new Race & the Right to a Healthy Environment report.

We had a great blog from our Campaigns Officer Alyson, looking back on the evaluation of Challenge Poverty Week 2024, and looking ahead to CPW25.

The Poverty Alliance's Living Wage Scotland team accredits Living Wage employers here, and we highlighted their great new branding. I like it a lot. I think it's got a lot of visual impact and brings Living Wages, Living Pensions, and Living Hours into a clear brand family.

🌟 A refreshed brand to support the growing movement for decent work.

Our updated brand is designed to support our mission to drive up standards of good work, so that everyone has a decent standard of living, now and in the future.

And we highlighted a new briefing based on our Citizens Across Scotland seminar in February.

👇 New briefing!
People with experience of living on a low income should help shape the solutions to poverty. We brought together people who have been involved in citizens' panels and other participation projects to talk about their experiences.
