Blog: Communication Officer’s log – weeks 12 & 13

People in the UK are desperate for a government that delivers a just and compassionate country.

They want to see an end to deepening poverty, debt, destitution, and hunger in their communities.

So many will have been distressed, disappointed, scared, and angry at UK Government plans to slash social security for sick and disabled people.

I helped prepare our response, and liaised with journalists to get it out in the news media, as well as publishing it on our own social media. My manager Ruth was interviewed on STV News, and I was a spokesperson on BBC Radio nan Gàidheal.

"Tha sinn a' faicinn righaltas a-rìthist a' feuchainn ri na buidseatan aca a chothromachadh le a bhith a' toirt air falbh bho na daoine as bochda san dùthaich... Chan eil sin ceart, agus chan eil e mòralta ann an dòigh sam bith."

One of the solutions to the seemingly never-ending undermining of social security is the Minimum Income Guarantee. I asked Fiona Collie of Carers Scotland to write a blog about their new report with IPPR Scotland, where they ask the Scottish Government to implement a pilot of the Guarantee with Scotland's unpaid carers.

"...the Minimum Income Guarantee could be the transformational change that unpaid carers need"
In her great guest blog, Fiona Collie of @carersscotland.bsky.social says politicians should back a #MinimumIncomeGuarantee pilot for #carers.

Me and my colleague Chloe hosted a workshop on the Minimum Income Guarantee at Aberlour's fantastic national conference on poverty and public debt on 17 March. Chloe clearly set out the way the Guarantee would work, and how it would help protect people from public debt. I talked about the work we've done looking at framing the Guarantee, and gave a sneak preview of some unpublished research on the topic that's been done for the Scottish Government.

I also published another great guest blog this week, this time from End Poverty Edinburgh activist Linda Craik.

"I believe that lots of people living in poverty would love to have their voices heard and to contribute to making the lives of others better – they just don’t know where to start."
A fantastic new guest blog from End Poverty Edinburgh activist Linda Craik.

From Monday 24 - Wed 26 April, I attended a first aid at work course organised by St Andrew's First Aid. I really enjoyed it and would highly recommend it. I've been a first aider for big chunks of my life - starting when me and my brother got our first certificates from the St Andrew's Ambulance Association after evening classes in Airdrie in 1983 or thereabouts.
